Legacy of the Organizers of the school for the Diffusion Of the Structural Sciences

Supporting the International School of Crystallography since 1974

About LODOS APS ETS

The association LODOS APS ETS (Legacy of the Organizers of the school for the Diffusion Of the Structural Sciences) was established to comply with recent changes in Italian financial regulations to ultimately ensure that the International School of Crystallography (ISCoC) courses can be organized for the foreseeable future.

The acronyms APS (Social Promotion Association) and ETS (Third Sector Organization) identify the Association as part of the Third Sector, which in Italy is the group of private non-profit organizations that operate for civic, solidarity and social utility purposes, carrying out activities of general interest (such as assistance, culture, environment) and supporting the State (First Sector) and the market (Second Sector).

Our Mission

The LODOS Association was established to complement the International School of Crystallography (ISCoC). Since 1974, the School has offered annual advanced courses in Erice for the international scientific community, focusing on crystallography and related methodologies. To further these objectives, the Association supports initiatives that foster collaboration among researchers and promote the educational and scientific dissemination of structural sciences.

Member Services

As a non-profit organization, the Association serves its members by organizing and promoting the International School of Crystallography, cultivating relationships with national and international scientific bodies—including the International Union of Crystallography, the European Crystallographic Association, and the International Organization of Crystal Growth.

Publications & Awards

Publishing scientific materials in print and digital formats, undertaking any initiative that may contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of crystallography and structural sciences, and establishing awards and scholarships for deserving students.

Key Activities

  • Organization and promotion of the International School of Crystallography and conferences, study days, other schools and training courses, workshops, seminar series, exhibitions
  • Development of relationships with related national and international associations and organizations
  • Publication and dissemination of scientific journals, reports, and manuals in both print and electronic format
  • Establishment and awarding of prizes and scholarships to deserving students
  • Undertaking any initiative that may contribute to the advancement of knowledge in the field of crystallography and structural sciences

Executive Committee

Annalisa Guerri

Secretary of the ISCoC and President of the LODOS

Working at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Florence (IT), as a Laboratory manager for the FloCEN (www.flocen.unifi.it). Attended first Erice course in 1997 and has been part of the organizing team since 2008.

"I attended my first Erice course in 1997 and immediately fell in love with the place and people. The course was the utmost scientific experience I ever had. Erice is not just about science!"

Giovanna Scapin

Director of the ISCoC and Vice President of the LODOS

Crystallographer who transitioned into CryoEM, currently Chief Scientific Officer of a U.S.-based contract research organization specializing in CryoEM services for the life sciences. Director of ISCoC since 2023.

"My first Erice course in 1988 was a pivotal moment in my career. I am committed to carrying forward the legacy of Sir Tom Blundell and the School's founder, Lodovico Riva di Sanseverino."

Paola Spadon

Treasurer of the ISCoC and of the LODOS

Working at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Padova and now retired. Attended the first Course in 1976 as a student and a helper of the organization.

"I attended my first Erice course in 1976 and the place, the people and the unique atmosphere created convinced me to continue helping the Organizers. Now, fifty years later, I am always happy to be there working for the young crystallographers."

Paolo Pio Mazzeo

Member of the Executive Committee

Associate Professor at the Dept. Of Chemical and Life Science and Environmental Sustainability at the University of Parma (IT), working as Crystallographer and Materials Scientist. He first attended the Erice course  in 2011 and now is actively involved in the organizion of the school.

"I've attended the first school as young PhD student and that really shaped the direction of my career. Since then, I’ve come to see that doing great science isn’t just about the equipment in your lab, it’s also about the people you choose to work and share your experiences with."

Fabio Nicoli

Webmaster and Secretary of the ISCoC, Webmaster of the LODOS website and the ISCoC app

I am a senior software developer at a private company. I first came to Erice in 2009 to assist with organization, and since 2014, I have been responsible for the school's website and the current app.

"From the very first day I arrived in Erice, I immediately appreciated the high level of scientific content and, at the same time, the spirit of sharing and cheerfulness that distinguishes crystallographers from all over the world."
